Real simple stuff. I worked on using the Ginga to maneuver around a standing punching bag while intermittently launching strikes at it. I was trying to fuse Capoeira footwork with hand techniques from other arts.

Yesterday I practiced some of Adigun Sipho's Capoeira technique. This was a response to a round punch. The sequence went as follows: esquiva lateral, horizontal elbow to the floating ribs, vertical elbow to the thigh, and tesoura (my addition). The original technique included a foot drag. Since this is technically "grappling" range, I thought that it could be useful to put my opponent on their back.
Today, I did some CLF technique. The first sequence was kam (as a block) while shifting into a c…

I've been too busy of late to do any significant training. Most of what I've done has been spontaneous and brief. I have been doing a lot of close quarter stuff. This is mostly been WC/CT, with a little CLF. I haven't done much Capoeira, as I'm holding off for the start of my training with a new Capoeira group, whose principle focus is self-defense.
Today I trained on my dummy (training apparatus). I also did some stick fighting. This was Kali, Naboot, and Sbayt Nkht stick (a CLF/Kalenda/Kali h…

Today my Kali class was cancelled. So I had my own class.
First I practiced a mix of Kali drills. Most of the drills was stuff that I've learned over the last month at the Respect Center (M. Perry's Kali system). The rest was some Inosanto Kali technique. This included the 12 basic strikes, six blocks, and stick strips (M. Perry stuff).
Second, I practiced some Capoeira technique. I practiced some free movements along with their combat applications. This included a mix of sweeps, throws, hand…

Kali:
I practiced the 12 strikes from Michael Perry's system.
Wing Chun:
Trained some technique from the Wooden Dummy form. I'm exploring the utility of these techniques for blocking inside strikes (hooks, upper-cuts, low jab, etc.). I also practiced some basic fighting movements.
Choy Lay Fut:
I practiced using a parry (Kam) to block a straight punch, while moving laterally to do Yum Tsop to the groin. I followed up with a Sao Choy.
Capoeira:
I practiced using esquiva offensively. This entai…

This is a simple drill that draws mainly from Wing Chun. Tan sao (blocking a round house punch) followed by or executed simultaneously with a straight punch to the face > striking hand collapses to a rising elbow upon entry > knee (MT style) to the floating ribs > drag the outside leg for a sweep.

Today I practiced a Capoeira sequence. This can be executed in response to a high punch or kick.
Cocorinha (to move under the attack) > chapa (done off the ground and delivered to the groin or knee) > rasteira (done in a negativa-style) > chapeau de couro (done to the head or body of a downed opponent).

After much deliberation I've decided to revert the original 10 Gate Theory of Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu that I learned back in 2003. Back in 2007 I modified Gates 5 and 6. However after re-reading an article by Phillip and Sam Ng I decided to reincorporate the original strategic modalities reflected in their application of this principle.
This has been a part of a more profound reflection on the combat theories of the three core systems of Sbayt Nkht (Choy Lay Fut, Wing Chun, and Capoeira). These re…

Capoeira: I worked on counters to a round house punch. The sequence is esquiva to the back, martelo or meia lua de frente to the body, and martelo or meia lua de frente to the leg. Finally, finish with rasteira or a bencao to the hips followed by rasteira.
Choy Lay Fut: I worked on defense against a straight punch. The sequence is block with chuin while striking with a tsop choy to the face. Follow this with a second tsop delivered by the same hand. Next, execute gwa choy and kup choy to the he…

I've been doing a lot of CLF lately. I'm trying to work through some concepts. I'm working on multi-directional attacks, using turning to generate power, using footwork for spatial penetration, and so forth.

This weeknd I practiced Sbayt Nkht stick fighting drills (3rd style, 1st drill and 2nd style, blocking drill). I also did some free-fighting using style 3 (CLF/Kalenda/SN) and 2 (Naboot/Tahtib). I also debated the merits of a 5 strike versus a 12 strike drill for style 1 (Kali).
I also developed a new Choy Lay Fut (CLF) drill for dealing with a four-way attack. This sequence is more compact and efficient than those found in many of CLF's forms.
Lastly, I worked on a basic Capoeira sequence. Th…

Today I did some bag work. This included Capoeira, Choy Lay Fut, and Wing Chun.
I began with the round house kick from the lead and rear leg. This was followed with Wing Chun's straight blast and some Choy Lay Fut strikes.
Eventually I decided to practice Capoeira ground movements. Next I added kicks (to the bag). Lastly, I added some Choy Lay Fut strikes.

I worked on some Capoeira movement. This was for the game and the fight. With regards to the game, I practiced striking from any evasive position. For the fight I reflected on some of Adigun Sipho's approaches to Capoeira self defense. I also worked on hand strikes and reviewed some of the techniques that I picked up while training with Baba Balogun in ATL.

Today I practiced Capoeira in the grass. The reduced traction and additional weight of my shoes made this more vigorous. I practiced various strikes and evasions. One sequence was a fake quexada that led to a standing chapa to a lower target (knee). From here I executed a chapau de couro to a high target (head). I reversed into a sweep and moved away with an s dobrado.
I also practiced some Choy Lay Fut hand technique. I isolated various pairs of techniques: tsop (vertical straight punch) and g…

Yesterday I had a very stimulating conversation with Formado Valenta of Capoeira Akebelan. It helped for me to clarify some concerns that I've had about my martial arts training.
Later that evening I did a little ground work using Capoeira. I want to focus more extensively on this range of combat.
Today I taught my son. We practiced a simple sequence: esquiva lateral > negativa > role > bencao > 3 palm strikes. It was a good drill.

I had a chance to train with Egbe Ogun today. It was great! This was a classic example of real-world martial art. Baba Balogun's system is quite unique and highly effective. In fact I need to to move to Atlanta so that me and the family can train with him regularly.
