Peace Baba. Your journey sounds fascinating. This is an interesting combination of arts that you've studied. It is also interesting how the African spirit expresses itself no matter what styles we train in.

Also, I appreciate your compliment and I look forward to learning from you.

It didn't happen on purpose. I was born a sick kid in 1960. I wasn't expected to live to the age of five but as always God has plans. As long as I can remember, I was enamored of warriors. It didn't hurt that my father and my oldest brother were both phenomenal. My father was from Carolina Puerto Rico where they fought machete duels. He taught me a lot about how to think as a warrior. His most important lessons to me where what he called Querpa Fuertes, which means strong body. The things he taught me enabled me to live where I would have surely died. My brother was a jailhouse fighter. He learned in New York where he was a member of the Stompers, a street gang. I had teachers that taught asia fighting systems, such as grandmaster Hulon Willis. He had one of the oldest martial arts programs in the United States with his classes on Kyokushinkai being taught at Virginia State College, but he taught it in a distinctly African way. It was his mentoring that gave me the courage to explore the roots of my fathers fighting culture as well as other diasporic martial arts. However, I don't consider myself special or even unique. I first consider myself blessed to have had the type of dynamic men and women in my life to help me to become the person that I am. Lastly, I consider life to be a journey and in my life I just consider that I have had more rest stops than some. Thank you for the conversation bro Kamau. Oh and by the way you may remember me from some of the other African martial arts forums as Hannibal. I have read your writings before and have always appreciated your wisdom.peace

I'm sorry I have been away

To all my friends and family I would like to say that I'm sorry to have been away so long. I have missed you all. It's not easy trying to promote a book while working and providing for your family. Never was that good at it. However, I have devoted all of my time to writing and learning. The first thing I learned was that I needed to learn more about book promotion because I knew next to nothing. I have been training my mind just as I trained my body. Just like my body my brain ached as I tried… Continue

Opportunity Knocks

Hello all I have some exciting news. I have recently been looking at the possibility of starting a television show. It would feature diasporic fighting systems. It would have a video magazine type of format that would include interviews, history, culture and techniques. This would be an excellent opportunity to present out culture in our own way and words. It is only tentative at this point but I would like to be contacted by all that would be interested on being featured. If I get the green lig… Continue

Steps

i have come to realize as I get older that life is about movement. Life itself is always in constant change. We travel from egg to grave without so much as a second thought but it's what occurs in between that makes the difference. I myself realize that as I grow older and continue to move I learn a little more each day. I am currently 48 and one of the most important things I have learned is not to sweat the unimportant things. The reason this important is because addressing these insignificant… Continue

Tradition?

I have been very busy as of late but I had to take the opportunity to write about something that recently got my attention. As a part of my book promotion, I have been in contact with quite a few writers, martial arts oriented and otherwise. I recently had a conversation that pretty much teed me off and I felt compelled to write about it. When speaking with someone that has what I consider to be a very large influence within the writing sphere of martial arts, The question of tradition came up. T… Continue

Spiritual obligations

When I teach people to become warriors it is impossible to separate them from their spiritual nature. It is our intimate relationship with God that gives our lives focus and direction. Without this direction we are no more than human scud missle's full of destructive potential with an unpredictable nature feared by both the good and the evil. This is not Gods way. All of our potential as human beings are contained in our very essence our "seed". Just as an oak tree starts out in its seed form an… Continue
