I like that. In fact most of my hand technique comes from the Chinese Martial Arts (CMAs). However, the astute observer will note that the Chinese arts have dead footwork in comparison to an African art like Capoeira. So Capoeira provides (among other things) my footwork, while I derive much of my hand applications from other systems (CMA, boxing, etc.).

If you ever do decide to blend them I'd like to know what turns up.

Hong Kong Phooey?

Why do you ask? Because I had the lunchbox in the 70's when i was growing up. You know that the Asian martial arts were the rage in the Black community at that time. It being reflected in cartoons was no mistake. Also, his voice was done by the famous Scatman Crothers. If you don't know who he is I might just have to check your Black card. Continue

If you pull out a gun I'm going to have to kill you

That was the quote from this New Haven hustler from the 80's talking about the art of survival. Today, due to various factors, there is alot of 'flash' going on. The notion that you would pull out a gun and NOT use it is foreign to alot of old school heads. At that point that the iron appeared it was assumed that the person was going to shoot.

This hustler ran into a youth who pulled a gun out on him while he was in his car. Now the youth thought he was going to 'intimidate' the hustler. The hu… Continue

Capoeira Angola saved my life

Yet not in the way that you might think. There are many studies that confirm what I am about to say yet observation will be your greatest reward. Learning any martial art will increase your balance. Thus you will be less likely to fall and hurt yourself. It has been proven that when the elderly take even a soft form like Tai Chi their rate of hip fractures and falls goes down tremendously.

I have worked on a boat and in some slippery kitchens. I have seen people REALLY fall and bust their asses… Continue

Coco duro or head butting with my son

My son has a hard head. No really. In Spanglish (his mother is Boriken) he is said to have a coco duro or a hard coconut head. Since he was young we have played various 'games' that bring us physically closer together. When he recently came to visit me (he's 9 btw) from his mother in FL to CT as soon as he got off the plane in the airport he tackled me and we proceeded to wrestle right in the airport. Yes, that's what we did. For those who have dealt with male youth before the science of wrestli… Continue

Moring, another African martial Art

Moring, a martial art of Malagasy African origin, made a full come back in Réunion Island . Youth appreciates the elegance of its figures and its rituals, rendering homage to its slave ancestry.

For over fifty years moring was only a memory in Réunion. The ritual fight was brought to the island by African and Malagasy slaves and was performed until the abolition of slavery in 1848.

One supposes that slave masters allowed it as long as the loud jousts did… Continue
